FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tax RefundsREFUNDSThe federal government and many states have implemented dial-in programs that allow taxpayers to call and check the status of the processing of their tax refunds. Caution: Taxpayers should wait a minimum of six to eight weeks (in some instances longer, as noted below) after filing their return before calling the numbers listed below. Generally, taxpayers will be requested to provide some identifying information before the status of a refund request will be provided
Federal RefundsTeletaxIf you are anxiously awaiting a tax refund from the federal government, but have yet to receive it, relief may be at hand. You can call the Automated Refund on TeleTax at 1-800-829-4477. The Service requests that you wait at least three weeks if you filed your taxes electronically, or six weeks if you mailed your tax return. If addition, you should have a copy of your tax return available because you will need to know the first social security number shown on the return, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar amount of your refund. The Automated Refund touch-tone service is generally available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Rotary or pulse service is generally available Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Hours may vary in certain areas.) Note that the IRS updates refund information every seven days. If you call to check the status of your refund and are not given the date it will be issued, you should wait at least one week before calling back. May I Have My Refund Deposited Directly into My Account?Yes. Direct Deposit refunds offer taxpayers many advantages over a refund check, including speed, security, and convenience. The IRS offers Direct Deposit of tax refunds on Electronic Filing (ELF) returns and TeleFile returns. Direct Deposit is also available on paper Forms 1040, 1040PC, 1040NR, 1040A, and 1040EZ. You may request Direct Deposit on non-electronic returns by filling out the requested information (Routing Transit Number, Bank Account Number, Account Type) in the Refund area of the return.
State Tax RefundsAt least 30 state tax departments have implemented procedures that allow taxpayers to check the status of processing returns and mailing tax refunds. AlabamaAlabama advises taxpayer to allow at least 12 weeks for tax returns to be processed. Written requests: After the 12-week period, taxpayers may complete and file Form IT-489, Taxpayer Refund Information. Copies of Form IT-489 may be obtained from any of the District Taxpayer Service Centers (see below). ArkansasThe average time to process an Arkansas tax return is 10 to 12 weeks. Taxpayers with touch-tone telephones may call to check the status of their refund by calling the Arkansas Automated Refund Helpline.
Taxpayers must have a copy of their return when the call. CaliforniaCalifornia has implemented an electronic message system to named F.A.S.T. (Fast Answers About State Taxes) at 1-800-338-0505.The three-digit code to check the status of a refund is 202. ColoradoTaxpayers requesting the status of income tax refunds should call the Department of Revenue's Voice Response System (RIVRS). To access RIVRS, call (303) 232-2446, then press the number "4." Access is permitted when one of five security codes is used in conjunction with the taxpayer's social security number: the last four digits of the taxpayer's telephone number as entered on the individual's income tax return; the amount of any estimate credit or payment made this year; the last five digits of an active billing number; the amount of the individual income tax refund; or a Personal Identification Number established with the Department of Revenue. DelawareDelaware taxpayers can request the status of a refund request by filling out an electronic form located on the Division of Revenue's web site.Taxpayers will be requested to provide their social security number, the first four letters of their last name, and the refund amount noted on the return. GeorgiaTaxpayers should allow at least eight weeks for the processing of returns (10 weeks for returns filed after April 1). If a refund is not received within such period, taxpayers within the Metro-Atlanta dialing area should call (404) 656-6286 or (404) 656-4674 to inquire about the status of their refund. Taxpayers outside the Metro-Atlanta Dialing area should call 1-800-338-2389. IllinoisIndividual taxpayers should allow 90 days from the time they filed their IL-1040. Business taxpayers should allow at least 90 days from the date they filed their business tax returns. Amended tax returns take from six months to one year for completion. New JerseyTaxpayers calling from within New Jersey who have access to a touch tone phone may dial 1-800-323-4400 to learn of the status of their tax refund. An automated script will lead the taxpayer through the steps necessary to determine the amount of their refund. Taxpayers should have their social security number ready when making this call. The hours of service for the system are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Taxpayers calling from out-of-state or taxpayers not having access to a touch tone phone can obtain tax refund information by calling the New Jersey Tax Hotline at 609-588-2200 and speak to a taxpayer service representative during normal business hours of 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. New YorkNew York taxpayers may determine the status of their refunds by calling the Taxpayer Assistance Bureau. PennsylvaniaThe Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has a toll-free Fact and Information Line at 1-888-PATAXES. Taxpayers can use this number to order or have forms faxed back to them, obtain answers to commonly asked questions, and get information on the status of returns and estimated payments. South CarolinaAllow at least 10 weeks for the processing of a tax return. After that period, taxpayers may call the South Carolina Tax Helpline Automated Refund Information by dialing 1-803-898-5300. Taxpayers should have a copy of the tax return with them, and will be asked to provide the following information::
Follow the recorded Tax Helpline instructions, which will walk you through the steps to access refund information. When asked to enter your refund amount in whole dollars, enter "00" at the end of the refund amount to represent the cents. Then press the "#" sign.
Undeliverable refunds: The South Carolina Department of Revenue has listed the names and addresses of refund checks that were returned as undeliverable. Names are sorted alphabetically by the last name of the primary individual listed on the return.
